New York Dolls

I hadn't been to the Museum of the Moving Image since its renovation.

That was a few years back. I remember it being more friendly, less airport-y. I also remember the permanent exhibition to be more interesting, less Hard Rock Cafe.

That's how time distorts memory. Things seem better then than they are now.

This weekend they're doing a series on Manhattan Cable Access. It sure makes New York City seem like a much cooler place 30 years ago than it is today. Even the woman obsessed with "clubs" seems like a genuine weirdo and not a pseudo-socialite on a shoe shopping mission.

The other impetus for the visit was to take in my pal Martha Colburn's new film, "Dolls vs. Dictators" and the adjacent installation. The museum commissioned it.

I saw a version in progress a little while back. The color of the project here looks great.

The show runs through April 10.

Our pal Doug Vitarelli just finished a website for kids www.whereisolifant.com about a dinosaur that lives in Central Park.

It's fun interactive site, even if you're older than the target audience.

On a futurist academic note, site like this are the leading edge of a new form of storytelling.  They mix traditional storybook material -words and drawings -but add time through animation and the non-linear reading experience.

Sam Henderson was in town for some comic book thing.

He stayed on our couch.  He could purchase a party loft on Fifth Avenue if everyone bought one of his works of art for a loved one for Christmas.

We're hard at work on Gail Levin's "Jeff Bridges: The Dude Abides" for American Masters.

In Stores Near You

Coming soon (probably tomorrow), a little write up on the extensive Charles Burchfield show at The Whitney.

In the meantime, one of favorite regularly recurring features: Our Work in the Real World.

Not only did we do a bunch of graphics for Christopher Noey's documentary "All About Prints", we designed the packaging.

I didn't even "face" the DVDs.  They were already like this.

Note: Our friend Martha Colburn did a blast of animation for the neighboring "The Devil and Daniel Johnston".  If I'm not mistaken Greg Ford produced some animation too which is only available on the DVD.

Here Comes Another

We've done a couple book promos, but nothing as good as this.



Martha Colburn made this for Simon and Schuster's "Here Comes Another Lesson" by Stephen O'Connor (no relation).

I like the music a lot. Nick de Witt is responsible for that.

As TV advertising dies and the reading experience merges more and more closely with the internet, it's a good sign that publishers are putting these types of ads out on the tubes.

Presidents

Martha Colburn sent us these collage paintings to commemorate Presidents' Day.

 

  

She did them in the 1990s and says they're "very Baltimore".
